這次展出的主題《Chicago Blues, A Tale of Two Cities 》在他的官方網站上有兩個系列。

Chicago Blues: A Tale of Two Cities

In 1996, I made my first trip to Chicago, this was 15 years after I start travelling around the USA. But once I discovered the Windy City, there was no stopping in exploring all the alleys, back ways and main ways of the third largest city in the United States.

From 1996 to 2001, I recorded life in black and white and on film, old fashioned Kodak Tri-X that I would developed and print myself, a book project has been ready since the early 2000’s. Then in 2011, the year I moved away from Chicago to go and live in North Carolina, I decided that it was time to shoot the City again, in color this time.

So each year since August 2011, I have photographed the City for about 3 months every year, walking around about 6 days a week, 30 kilometers a day, or more than the distance between Taipei and New York.

The title refers to a tale of two cities as Chicago is moving in two opposite directions, its downtown ever so more beautiful and attractive, with the Magnificent Mile, the Board of Trade, it’s sports teams and fun nightlife. On the other end, the West Side and South Side struggling with mounting problems with extreme poverty, drugs and rising crime. Too little investments, not enough long term projects create all sort of problems, so these neighborhoods struggle to keep up with the benefits of the modern world, street are run down, houses abandoned, no supermarkets in large areas.

My walks record all of this, Chicago like most American Cities, is laid out in a grid, so I can walk for 14 km straight on Madison Street or just follow the loop under the L –the famous Chicago Subway- walking in circles the whole day.

The images here are shown for the very first time, some shot only a few months ago.
This is the longest I have worked on a single project, the next step and my final goal will be to try to publish a book.

The reading of the photographs is not always easy as life, for too many, is not beautiful every day or ever for some. There is joy, there is sadness, you are the witness that maybe someday can help to reach a better world for all.
